Some varieties of cannabis can produce male parts alongside female flowers on the same plant, especially if exposed to environmental stressors. These plants are known as hermaphrodites, and sometimes they can self-pollinate to create seeds.
But sometimes you get lucky and find a mature seed in some really nice herb. Strains like the legendary Chemdog wouldn’t be possible without adventurous smokers planting and proliferating the seeds they found in a bag of kind bud.
How weed clones work
These are referred to as “bagseeds” and whether or not you can grow one will depend on where it came from.
Males will have round balls—these will develop into pollen sacs, which will release pollen into the air when mature.
Once cannabis seeds are mature, the female plant begins to die, and seeds are either dropped to the ground where they grow into new cannabis plants next spring, or the seeds are harvested for processing into seed oil or food products, or stored so they can be sown in the ground later and become the next generation of plants.
Having some seeds in the mix doesn’t mean your weed is bad. However, if your buds have a lot of seeds in them it might not be as potent as it could be. The potency can be significantly reduced as the plant’s energy is working towards reproduction and producing seeds instead of just the flower, cannabinoids (CBD, THC), trichome and terpene goodness.
If you’re feeling ambitious you can take the seeds out of your pot and try to grow from them. Here are a couple tips for determining whether or not to grow with the seeds you find:
Why This Matters
Purchasing weed with no seeds in it will get you better quantity and quality for the money you invest. The highest quality and most potent form of weed is that with no seeds. This weed is called Sinsemilla .
You don’t want to spend your hard-earned money, come home ready to relax with your latest weed purchase, only to find that it’s full of seeds and not worth the money you invested. That said, even if you haven’t had the misfortune of buying weed full of seeds, it’s good to know the difference between good and bad weed, with or without a pesky seed invasion.
This doesn’t mean it is bad for your health but we advise against smoking seeds. Please remove them as you see them – you may find them crushed up in your grinder! The presence of seeds does mean that the total mass of smokable weed is compromised with decreased cannabinoid content and quite a few unwanted seeds. Think about it this way: If you purchase an ounce of cannabis and it comes filled with seeds, you are paying for the seeds which are less desirable than the cannabis flower that you were expecting.
